The use of surveys as a tool to gauge customer satisfaction and dictate company direction is a practice that far outdates the creation of the internet and the advent of social media marketing—but its relevance has never been greater, as the growth of online survey marketing indicates.

More often than not, businesses interested in putting together surveys face two considerable obstacles. The first is a vast deficit when it comes to the interpretation of the data collected. It’s fine to determine that 7 of every 10 survey participants prefer to receive weekly e-newsletters, but if a company isn’t able to take that information and combine it with the 4 out of 10 who responded positively to the idea of SMS marketing, they’re lost.

The second most common obstacle—and possibly the more significant of the two—is a lack of technological know-how. Anyone can come up with a list of 20 questions to ask any audience, but integrating a poll onto an existing website or embedding it into the body of an email message is another thing entirely. An online survey builder or other software program is strongly recommended as a way to bridge this gap.
