The list of spam filter words is growing. Not only is it now practically impossible to mention free giveaways in the subject line of your emails to customers without getting lumped in with Viagra resellers and porn peddlers, but spam filter programs have now evolved to the point where they’re scouring email for context.

Here’s a brief list of email no-no’s that could get you misidentified as email marketing spam.

• Discussing money, especially large sums of it.
• Talking about some sort of breakthrough. These are generally the talking points of spammers who try to sell the unsuspecting audience on something they need that didn’t exist until yesterday.
• Stressing urgency. There go your plans of holding a special 24-hour online sale.
• Offering a money back guarantee. You can still offer one, just don’t talk about it in the email or mention it in the email subject to be on the safe side.

Does this mean that your marketing emails will forever require the masking of topics or the creative use of language to avoid certain spam filter words? The jury’s still out on the former, but it’s a definitely possibility for the latter. All of which will only serve to make the jobs of email marketers far more difficult as time goes by. So break out your thesaurus and start toning up on your wordsmithing abilities.
