Survey Fields Explained

Understanding Survey Fields

After you've chosen the type of survey you wish to create and a template (optional) you will be redirected to the "Survey Canvas" where you will be able to use the drag and drop survey builder to setup all the survey fields.

There are 3 field sections in the surey builder

  • Standard Fields
  • Template Fields
  • Advanced Fields
Standard fields
These are fields that are used in most surveys.

Text Field: Used for adding a text input box to your survey. Ideal for capturing names, passwords, phone numbers, email addresses or any other free flowing text.

Paragraph: Used for adding a text area box. Ideal for capturing lengthy responses such as feedback, suggestions, comments etc.

Plain Text: This is just a chunk of plain text you can add anywhere within the survey. Ideal for inserting explaination paragraphs, blurbs or small chunks of text outlining a section in the survey.

Section Break: Inserts a horizontal line break wherever it is inserted within the survey.

Multiple Choice: Used for adding radio buttons in a multiple choice answer type section. Idea for multiple choice questions.

Checkboxes: Used for adding checkbox options to a survey response. Ideal for questoins where more than one response can be expected.

Drop Down List: From a functionality point of view, they are identical to a multiple choice radio box because the end user can only make one choice at a time. Ideal for representing options for a question where multiple possible responses need to be presented for the user to choose one response.

Questionnaire Field: Used for producing a likert style questionnaire using scale options. Ideal for when you want to ask questions where responses can be grouped as a number on a scale (E.g. on a scale of one to ten, how would you rate the following. With the "following" being a list of questions)

Template Fields

Template fields are standard fields bundled together to cater for the most common uses of individual standard fields in a survey.

Name Field: This is a combination of Salutation (Standard Drop Down Field), First Name (Standard Text Field) and Last Name (Standard Text Field)

Address Field: This is a combination of 5 standard text fields that make up Address, Address Line 2/Suburb, City, State and postal code.

Country Field: This is a drop down list box with all known country names.

Date Field: A date input field with a date picker

Time Field: A time input field

Date & Time Field: A combination of both Date and Time field.

Advanced Fields

The advanced fields are used for capturing intricate data such as an uploaded file or a hidden field and should only be used if you know exactly what you are doing.

Terms and conditions Field: This is a checkbox field with validation that requires the field be checked before survey can be completed. Ideal for getting acceptance to terms or confirming opt in.

Hidden Field: Used for tranfering data over a URL parameter to a field within the form. Ask your developers about this.

File Upload field: This is a file upload field allowing up to 5MB file upload supporting all common document, image and media formats.
